Turning the new Mac mini into a remote server you can reach from anywhere

Apple announced a new Mac mini on 25 August 2026 and it arrives on 22 September. The interesting part is not the speed bump. It is that Apple spent its own launch copy talking about local language models, which is the clearest signal yet that this machine is meant to sit somewhere and work. A machine that sits somewhere and works has one problem: you are not always in the same room as it. That is the problem Servey exists for, and it is worth setting the mini up with that in mind from day one.
First, the machine itself, from Apple's own announcement rather than a rumour post. The Mac mini now comes with the M6 or the M5 Pro. The M6 has a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, 16GB of unified memory as standard and 32GB as an option, and 170GB/s of memory bandwidth. The M5 Pro goes to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, 64GB of unified memory and 307GB/s. Both get Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with a 10Gb option. They start at $899 and $1,699, and both were available to pre-order from announcement day.

The memory row is the one that decides this for most people, and it is worth pausing on. Unified memory is what a local language model actually lives in, so the ceiling on your memory is roughly the ceiling on the model you can hold. The M6 tops out at 32GB. That is comfortable for the quantised models most people run day to day and restrictive if you had ambitions beyond that. The M5 Pro's 64GB is the reason to spend the extra, and if local models are the point of the machine it is not really an upgrade so much as the actual requirement.
The short answer, if you are buying one to leave running: take the memory you actually need, put it on Ethernet, set it up headless while a monitor is still attached, and settle how you will reach it before it goes on a shelf. That last step is the one people leave until the display is already unplugged, and it is the one Servey exists to make trivial.
Why Apple is talking about LM Studio in a Mac mini announcement
Because that is the workload the machine is being sold for. Apple's own figures put the M6 at up to 13.5 times faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio than the M1 mini, and up to 4.8 times faster than the M4. The M5 Pro is quoted at up to 8.5 times faster than the M2 Pro and up to 4 times faster than the M4 Pro. Whatever you make of vendor benchmarks, the choice of benchmark is the message: Apple is pitching a small desktop computer on how quickly it can chew through a prompt.
That reframes what a Mac mini is for. A machine bought to run models, agents, build servers and automation is not a machine you sit in front of. It is infrastructure. It wants to be plugged in somewhere with good airflow and a wired connection, and left alone.

- Build and test runners that do not fight you for your laptop's fans.
- Media processing, backups and the small personal services that accumulate.

The problem with infrastructure in your house
You are not always in your house. The moment a Mac mini becomes the machine that does the work, its location stops being a detail and becomes the limit. The agent stops to ask a question and you are on a train. A build fails and you are at a desk somewhere else. You want to check what the model is doing and the machine is forty minutes away.
This is where most people discover that reaching a Mac at home is harder than it should be. Screen Sharing works beautifully on your own network and not at all outside it. A VPN back to your house is a real answer and a real thing to maintain. Port forwarding is not an answer at all if your connection sits behind carrier-grade NAT, which a growing number do, because there is no public address to forward from.

Setting the new mini up headless, in the right order
Do all of this while a monitor is still plugged in. Two of the steps are close to impossible without one, and the single most common way this goes wrong is unplugging the display before turning remote access on. - Turn on Remote Login and Screen Sharing in System Settings, under General and then Sharing, before you disconnect anything.
- Stop it sleeping: sudo pmset -a sleep 0 and sudo pmset -a disksleep 0. An idle Mac that sleeps answers nothing.
- Make it survive a power cut with sudo pmset -a autorestart 1, and decide deliberately about FileVault - an encrypted disk stops at the unlock screen after an unattended reboot.
- Use the Ethernet port rather than Wi-Fi 7 if the mini is going to sit in one place. Wired is one less thing that can be flaky at three in the morning.
- Give it a name you will recognise later, because you will be typing it.
One thing that is genuinely different on a machine bought for models: think about thermals and placement before you shove it behind the router. A mini that is chewing through prompts for hours is not idling at a few watts, and a small aluminium box in a cupboard behaves differently from one on an open desk. Give it air.
The resolution trap is worth knowing about too. With no display attached at all, macOS falls back to a default resolution that is often an awkward shape, so your remote desktop arrives small or letterboxed. A dummy HDMI plug costs very little and fixes it. Should you buy one for this?
If you already have a Mac mini, no - the M4 and even the M2 are perfectly good at being always-on machines, and the honest reason to upgrade is local model performance specifically, not remote access. Remote access works the same on all of them.
If you are buying, the interesting case is the one Apple is clearly aiming at: an always-on machine at home that runs models and agents, which you reach from a laptop or an iPad wherever you happen to be. That combination is genuinely new, and it is the case Servey was built around. It was not practical when the mini was a desktop you sat at, and it is not practical on a laptop you carry, because the laptop is with you and asleep in a bag. At $899 it is also considerably less than a year of most cloud GPU habits, and the data never leaves your house.
